Item Description: This book has some wear. The bottom corner of page 79 has been torn out. There is a 1/4 inch tear in the title page. There are minimal dog-eared pages. Very few pages have dirty finger smudges. This book was a library book and has card holder, stamp, and reference sticker.

"Karl Zorn, on the bench opposite the door, pushed his straight blond hair out of his eyes and clutched his composition tightly. He had worked hard on it. He hoped it would take the prize. Early in the term Mr. Adams had said that he would give three lead pencils to the pupil who wrote the best composition on his favorite hero. This was a prize worth working for; pencils were scarce and expensive in Texas in 1873. The children used slates and slate pencils, or, if they wrote on paper, used charred cypress twigs. Karl had copied his composition at home on foolscap with Pa's lead pencil, so he knew it looked neat. He hoped that would help in the judging when Mr. Adams read it. He was anxious to hand it in."
